The Exchange Report: Smith partner schools ranked by students
By Daniel Zaika · October 21, 2026 · Based on a Winter 2026 exchange
Every year, hundreds of Smith Commerce students go on exchange to more than 130 partner schools, and when they come back, many of them answer Queen's exchange surveys about what it was really like. That's an incredible dataset that mostly sits unread. The Exchange Report is our attempt to turn it into something useful: a student-driven ranking of Smith partner schools based on what returnees actually experienced, not on brochures or global league tables.
Important: the rankings shown on Exchange Hub are currently sample data while our editor verifies them against the survey results. Treat this post as an explanation of how the report works and what to look for, and check back as we publish verified rankings.
Why another ranking?
Global university rankings like the FT, QS or Times Higher Education are designed to measure research output, reputation and graduate salaries. They're useful for choosing a full degree, but they say very little about whether a semester abroad will be good for you. A school can be top-10 in the world and still be a frustrating exchange if courses don't transfer back, housing is a nightmare, or exchange students are isolated from locals. Conversely, a school you've never heard of can deliver the best four months of your degree.
What we measure
We group returnee feedback into five areas. Academics: course quality, workload, how easily courses map to Smith requirements and how professors treat exchange students. Cost: rent, food, transit and travel compared to what students expected. Social life: how easy it was to make friends with locals and other exchange students, and how active the international student community is. Location and travel: what there is to do in the city and how easy weekend trips are. Support: housing help, orientation and how responsive the international office was.
How we score
Each area gets a score based on returnee ratings and comments, normalised so that schools with lots of responses and schools with only a few can be compared fairly. We flag schools with very small sample sizes rather than ranking them confidently. Every quote we publish is tagged to a real student and semester, and our Content & Community Lead verifies quotes before they go live. AI helps us draft summaries; humans check every claim.
Patterns that show up again and again
Even before the full verified ranking, some patterns are clear from returnee conversations and they match what exchange students report across many universities. First, location beats prestige for overall satisfaction. Students rarely regret picking a city they love. Second, housing makes or breaks the semester. Schools that help exchange students find housing get far happier reviews. Third, course equivalency surprises are the number-one academic complaint. Students who check course mappings early have much smoother semesters. Fourth, cost expectations are often wrong in both directions: Western European cities can be cheaper than Toronto, while some Asian and Australian cities have surprisingly high rent.
How to use the report
Don't use a ranking to pick your school. Use it to break a tie or to sanity-check a choice. Start with what you want: the vibe of the place, your budget, your course focus, how comfortable you are with a new language, which term you're going, and how you like to spend weekends. That's exactly what our 60-second match quiz asks, and it uses the same school profiles that power the report. Then use the report to look deeper at your top three: where do they shine, and where do returnees warn you about problems?
Categories we'll publish
Along with an overall ranking, we'll publish category leaders that are more useful than a single list: best for skiing and outdoors, best beach semester, best for weekend travel, best value for money, best for finance courses, best for language immersion and best for making local friends. Each category links directly to the school guides, where you'll find SIM, transit, budget, calendar, hangout and peer-voice modules built from returnee input.
Help us make it better
If you're a Smith returnee, the report is only as good as the stories behind it. We interview returning students every semester. If you'd like your school represented accurately, especially if it's one of the many partners we don't have a guide for yet, reach out on Instagram (@exchangehubqueens). Every verified tip helps the next Maya, staring at 130+ options and one deadline, make a confident choice.
The bottom line
The best exchange school is the one that fits you. The Exchange Report gives you peer evidence; the match quiz gives you a starting shortlist; and the school guides help you actually live there once you arrive. Use all three together.
